Barraclough DM FRCP BFRP
My
Background
I
was born and brought up in England, went to medical school at
Oxford and qualified as a doctor in 1970. After gaining experience
in various branches of medicine including radiotherapy, general
practice and general psychiatry, I specialised in the emerging
field of psycho-oncology and carried out clinical work, research
projects and teaching about the psychological aspects of cancer.
From 1991 - 2000 I held the post of Consultant in Psychological
Medicine at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. My postgraduate
qualifications are FRCP, FRCPsych, DM and my academic publications
include peer-reviewed papers, review articles and books (some
under my former name of Jennifer Hughes).
When
I moved to Auckland in 2000 with my husband I felt ready to take
early retirement from medicine, and pursue my interest in holistic
healing and personal development. I had already completed a course
of study with the College of Healing (www.collegeofhealing.org)
and went on to qualify as a life coach from CoachU (www.coachu.com)
and then as a Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner (www.bachcentre.com),
as well as taking short courses in various other forms of natural
therapy and continuing to write and edit books.
I
support the integrative model which combines the 'best of both
worlds' - orthodox medicine and natural healing - and also believe
that self-responsibility for health is important.
I
live in an old Devonport villa with my husband and cats. I became
a New Zealand citizen in 2003 and thoroughly enjoy the local lifestyle,
but have retained many personal and professional links with the
UK and make return visits about once a year.
